Promoting Transparency and Accountability in Guatemala

From 2003 to February 2005, C&A managed an anti-corruption program in Guatemala funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development. The program’s key components were working with members of Guatemalan civil society to advance their efforts to build consensus on a national anti-corruption and transparency agenda and strengthening the federal Comptroller General’s office and its ability to combat corruption. Activities included public awareness initiatives to improve citizens’ knowledge about their right to demand government transparency, augmenting the government's ability to conduct internal control reviews and audits of key government institutions, regulatory reforms to eliminate gaps that foster corrupt acts or allow impunity, and improvements to the Comptroller General’s website and other public outreach capabilities. In 2005, the Central America and Mexico Anti-Corruption, Transparency, and Accountability Program (CAM) replaced this project with a regional project in Guatemala and three other Central American countries.
